Course Content (Syllabus)
Introductory concepts (metric properties of the map, cartography, historical evolution). Geodetic coordinate systems and cartographic projection systems (the concept of projection, types of projection systems, reference systems, parameters of systems, GGRS '87). General technical aspects of map design (concept and visualization of scale, relationship between scale and content, scale and images, surface measurements). Mapping of point, surface, volumetric and morphological features. Thematic cartography. Symbolism (data classification and classification, symbol forms, symbol types, map types). Automated cartography. Basic principles of map design (digital cartography, data standards, map design phases, map highlighting, constraints). Principles of selection and generalization. Extraction of quantitative data from maps. Accuracy of mapping (uncertainty, minimum cartographic unit, correctness and accuracy, estimation of map accuracy, comparison of maps, change detection). Map correlation methods. Methods and systems for classifying and mapping vegetation (map series, forest maps, forest map symbols, CORINE European database, LPIS national database, forest cadastre, internet atlases). The practical training is carried out using specialized GIS software and, in particular, the free open-source software QGIS.
