Course Content (Syllabus)
The course inquires into issues that relate to the role of improvisation in teaching and learning music. We begin from a thorough discussion of the different definitions of improvisation in music and beyond, and inquire into the socio-historical contexts in which these definitions are rooted. We also look into the variety and the breadth of improvisation-related practices in different musics and eras. We then enter music education and look into improvisation has been employed in our field. In our meetings we try to balance theoretical discussion with hands on practice. We try to remove the obstacles that students face in their attempt to delve into creative improvisation - obstacles that are the result of conservative practices of leaning music. We aim at creating a fertile context for students to make music, both in groups and individually, using different means techniques and logics of improvisation.
