Course Content (Syllabus)
The course analyses the dialectical relationship between the state, war and the economy through the analysis of historical examples. The first part of the course, entitled "war and the economy" focuses on the role of war and its economic aspects in the formation of modern states, the role of the economy in the conduct of total war, and the importance (and cost) of modern war technology. It also examines the various theories that see the economy as a cause of the initiation or avoidance of war. The second section of the course, entitled "the state and its armed contestation", examines national liberation and anti-colonial movements and civil wars from World War II to the end of the Cold War.
