Upon completion of the course students will: • Have been trained in the use of Catalogs of musical manuscripts. • Get to know most of the musical manuscripts of the Mount Athos Monasteries. • Get to know about the various musical systems contained in musical manuscripts of Mount Athos. • Have delved into the styles and contents of musical manuscripts.

Course Content (Syllabus)
In this section there is a presentation of the music manuscripts that are preserved in the libraries of Mount Athos as well as the catalogs containing descriptions of the music codes. A study of melody styles is made on the manuscripts and their content. The various notational systems, which have appeared from time to time, are examined. Some elements of Music Palaeography are given and also, indicatively, we examine the libraries of the Pantokratoros and Vatopedi Monastery. (Efstratiadou, Manousaka, Politi) •The catalogs of the Music Manuscripts (prof. Gr. Stathis) 2. The Manuscripts of the Pantokratoros Monastery 3. Other notation systems in Mount Athos manuscripts and other libraries (I, alphabetical and pentagram) 4. The Manuscripts of Vatopedi Monastery I 5. The Manuscripts of Vatopedi Monastery II 6. Presentation and examination of postgraduate students' work 7. Issues of Greek Palaeography for Byzantine-musicologists 8. Other notation systems in Mount Athos manuscripts and other libraries (II, alphabetical and pentagram) 9. Melody style, contents and cataloging of Mount Athos music manuscripts I 10. Melody style, contents and cataloging of Mount Athos music manuscripts II 11. Elements of Music Palaeography I (methodological issues, study tools, transcriptions) 12. Elements of Music Paleography II (the old octoechos, metrophonia-solmization-melody, cheironomy, interpretation) 13. Presentation and examination of postgraduate students' work.

Student Assessment
Description
Students are evaluated in the course, through two oral exams, one in the middle and the other at the end of the teaching period. At the end of the course and the semester, the students have to write an assignment that covers the content of all the taught material. The grading of the course results from the offsetting of the oral exams (25% each) and the final written assignment (50%).
