Course Content (Syllabus)
This course is designed exclusively for classics majors. It offers a detailed survey of the development of philosophical thinking throughout antiquity and an in-depth study of special issues examined in classical scholarship, for example Plato’s philosophy and mathematics. Another focus of this course is the crossing of genres in certain texts and its relation to philosophy, for example the use of philosophy as theme with the aim at satire in Lucian’s ‘philosophical’ works. The texts used in the course are studied closely in the original Greek and emphasis is given to issues pertaining to language, style and interpretation.
