Learning Outcomes
At the end of the semester, the student will be able to: 1. recognize and analyze the traits of the main film movements and genres, 2. recognize and analyze thethe sociopolitical context that influences cinema and 3. conduct bibliographical and academic research and write an academic essay.

Course Content (Syllabus)
This course presents briefly the history of cinema from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the new millennium. The conditions of the medium’s birth and development, silent film (development of classic narrative, German impressionism, French impressionism & Soviet montage), Hollywood’s Golden Era and film genres, New Waves and New Cinemas (1958-1960), New Hollywood and changes in production, distribution and technology. Emphasis is given on the impact of the historical context on film production and distribution. Finally, additional focus is given on the methodology of New Film History and the basic guidelines/principles of academic research and writing.

Description
Students are evaluated based on an individual academic paper (1,500 to 2000 words, 85%) and class participation (15%). Students can receive extra credit through weekly individual or group micro-assignments (max number of micro-assignments/student:3, grade/project (0,5-1/10).
