Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to: - understand and look for co-morbidity in elderly patients - raise awareness and recognize that the health status of an elderly person also depends on effects beyond the manifestations of various diseases, such as social, psychological, emotional, mental, environmental, spiritual and economic factors - know the most common and important pathological diseases encountered in elderly patients. - able to assess the functional status of the elderly person and to know the basic principles of Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Introduction - Basic principles - Definitions. The doctor as an geriatrician. Pathophysiology of aging. Theories of aging. Treatment of infections in the elderly. Basic Diagnostic Principles of Geriatric Diseases. Heart failure in elderly patients - treatment. Hematopoietic disorders. Treatment of cancer in the elderly. Skin disorders in the elderly. Nutrition principles for elderly. Vascular strokes. Psychiatric disorders of old age. Organic Mental Syndromes. Basic principles for the treatment of geriatric diseases. Medical diseases in the elderly. Surgical problems in the elderly. Sleep disorders in the elderly. Changes in renal function in the elderly. Urinary tract disorders. Incontinence in the Elderly. Endocrine problems in the elderly. Musculoskeletal disorders and Spondyloarthropathies in the elderly. Immune problems in the elderly. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Description
Comprehensive geriatric assessment aims towards assessing the functional potential of an elderly person. It is being facilitated by a healthcare professionals team, nevertheless it is useful to have a hands on experience in using it. Aims of the written assignment are: To gain hands-on experience in Comprehensive geriatric assessment of elderly patients To get to know and use some of the most commonly used screening tools in geriatrics To spot and potentially seek solutions for problems the student might identify with the patient, and try and suggest individualized interventions In the assignment the student will seek an elderly patient and try and implement comprehensive geriatric assessment. He/she will have to practice history taking, clinical assessment and use of widely used screening tools. Finally, he/she will summarise findings, comment on the status of the patient, reflect on potential problems in the use of screening tools or scales and comment on potential geriatric syndromes present in your patient. Project length approx 1000±200 words.
