Upon successful completion of the course, the student will have •a basic knowledge and understanding of French History and Civilization. •the capacity to use this knowledge and update it, in order to evaluate the overall course of European culture at the same time and its evolution in the historical process. •the capacity to understand historical and literary, political and economic terms, in order to develop vocabulary, to improve and deepen all writing and oral skills in French. •developed their production capacity of written and oral expression in communication. •developed critical thought •cultivated the ability to synthesize and unify cultural and ideological data and to integrate them into the language teaching process.

In this course, we study, in the broadest European context in the light of globalization, French History and Civilization, from the Middle Ages to the beginning of the 20th century. By defining the main stages of French History and Civilization of this precise period, we approach issues related both to the historical and socio-political framework and to all the intellectual, literary, artistic and techno-economic achievements of the French nation. We also examine, in the current context of globalization, the overall course and evolution of the modern European civilization with a reference point to the current geopolitical, socio-economic and cultural situation in Europe. The interdisciplinary approach of History, Civilization and French Language at the same time has as its ultimate goal the observation on the part of the students that History has an intercultural character. It is not fragmentary but linear and it teaches that the world is in fact a resultant of forces whose synthesis constitutes the main challenge. The following units are covered in this module: 1.Introduction to the Middle Ages, a period of ten centuries (V - XV centuries): the formation of the feudal regime and the political emergence of France 2. XI and XII centuries: the golden centuries of chivalry and courtly literature 3. XIII century: the golden age, the birth of the bourgeoisie and lyricism in literature 4 XIV and XV centuries: the foundations of a new historical-political and literary context 5. XVI century: the end of feudal civilization, the Renaissance and Humanism 6. XVII century: the establishment of absolute monarchy and the triumph of classicism 7. XVIII century: the transition from the Old Regime to the Revolution 8. The French Revolution: Political Clubs, the Great Terror, the Directory 9. The 18th century: the century of philosophers, the Encyclopedia, political literature 10. The XIX century: the conflict between the monarchical order and the liberal bourgeoisie Republic- the successive upheavals in the arts and literature (Romanticism, Realism, Naturalism) 11. From the Republic to the Napoleonic Empire (1799-1815): the Civil Code and Napoleonic society 12. The XIXth century: the century of the Revolutions and the absolute triumph of the bourgeoisie as a reflection of the XXI century 13. The Third Republic (1875-1940): aspects of contemporary French civilization in the context of a deep ongoing European crisis
