Course Content (Syllabus)
The course focuses on the French novel production over the centuries, combining the history of literature with poetic issues. It consists of a historical itinerary of French novel production from the Middle Ages until the French Revolution. Its aim is to train students on the particularities of this specific production, i.e. evolution and modification of the genre, structure vs. sense, novel components, etc. The study of representative extracts and the learning of specific terms necessary for the study of a novel are included in the syllabus of this course. SYLLABUS 1. General introduction: evolution of the French novel, terminology 2. Different types of novels 3. The medieval novel 4. The 16th century novel 5. François Rabelais 6. Early 17th century novel a) pastoral and heroic novels 7. Early 17th century novel b) comic novels and short stories 8. Late 17th century novel c) Mme de La Fayette, histoires secrètes, utopie. 9. Late 17th century novel d) Télémaque and different kinds of fairy-tales 10. Early 18th century novel a) Montesquieu, Marivaux 11. Early 18th century novel b) Prévost, Lesage 12. Late 18th century novel a) The philosophical novel 13. Late 18th century novel b) The liberal spirit.
