Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course, students should be able to translate short specialized texts within the specialty areas examined in class. They are expected to identify terminology and phraseology in the source text and render them in translation; and to search for appropriate and reliable print and electronic resources.
Course Content (Syllabus)
This course aims at introducing students to the theory and practice of Specialized Translation, particularly from French into Greek. The main objectives of the course are:
1. Introduction to Languages for Special Purposes (LSP), terminology and phraseology
2. Introduction to research and documentation techniques and to the evaluation of the resources (online glossaries, databases, print and electronic resources, corpora)
The course is divided into two sections: "Basics" (21h)and "Practical Applications" (18h). In "Practical Applications" (24 hours), students will be trained in analyzing and translating various types of documents and specialty areas. The specialty areas are defined at the beginning of the course. E.g. environment, tourism, culture, popular science.
