Course Content (Syllabus)
This course aims at guiding students to a broader understanding of the different modes of cinematic narration as it has been developed since the beginning of the 20th century in American cinema and internationally. Through the study of specific fims and theoretical texts, the course juxtaposes classical with avant-garde, post-classical, independent and art-cinema narration, placing particular emphasis on complex narratives beyond Hollywood canonic narration. Focusing on each type of narration is accompanied by required film viewings (including but not limited to works by filmmakers such as Griffith, Murnau, Deren, Hawks, Kubrick, Lynch, Nolan et al). Through close work with case studies, students learn how to identify the characteristics of each mode of narration, develop skills for their analysis, and engage with the comparative study of narrative styles.
