Learning Outcomes
- The course will allow students to appreciate translators and interpreters not only as objects of representation, but also as agents of representation and social change.
- Students will familiarise themselves with the analytical tools that will enable them to examine the thematisation of translation and interpreting in literature and film.
- Students will further develop their audiovisual literacy as well as analytical reading skills.
- Students will be able to reflect on the key themes of translation and interpreting through the use of the rich intertextual resources of film and literature.
- Students will explore the diverse ways in which the dramatic function of translation is used in contemporary media (e.g. to convey irony or make a political comment).
- Students will be able to acknowledge the (in)visilbility of the agents of translation.

Course Content (Syllabus)
This course intends to approach different representations of translation and interpreting in literature and film, which will allow students to discuss the political, cultural and social significance of translation/interpreting in different time periods. Through the works presented in the course, an attempt will be made to situate translation and interpreting in the historical context of each work and identify any changes in their role in time. Some of the authors and directors that will be discussed include Brian Friel, Jhumpa Lahiri, Sofia Coppola, Vittorio de Sica, Michel Ocelot, and Sydney Pollack.
