Learning Outcomes
The aim of the course is to introduce the student into the art of modernism through the study of the works of the great masters of the 19th century, who formed the circumstances for the establishement/formation/επικρατηση; of modernism. For the same reason the course refers to the art movements of the late 19th to the early 20th century.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The principles of mimetic reproduction of the material environment of academic art compositions will be challenged with the work of Modernist artists. The Impressionism movement is the starting point of the course: European Art from 1880 until the First World War. The aim of the course is to show the artistic movements and currents that emerge through the political, social conditions as well as the scientific conditions for the evolution of art especially during the last quarter of the 19th and the first decades of the 20th century. In more detail the presentations are organized as follows: • Introduction • Characteristics of Modernism in the visual arts • 1st section: Impressionism • Post-Impressionism • Expressionism: Die Brücke • Fauvism Henri Matisse • Der Blaue Reiter • Cubism George Braque (1882-1963), Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) • Abstract Art: Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) Kazimir Malevich (1878-1936): Suprematism
