Prerequisites
General Prerequisites
Sufficient knowledge on Byzantine and Medieval (Western European and Slavic) History, and basic comprehension ability of medieval texts (Greek and Latin). Sufficient knowlege of one -at least- basic European language for the approach and use of modern bibliography.
Learning Outcomes
Post-graduate students who attend the course are expected, after its completion, to be familiar with the various types and characteristics of Byzantine and Medieval (Western European and Slavic) sources and to be able to read written sources on multiple levels to extract reliable historical information.

Course Content (Syllabus)
This is a modular course with multiple instructors. It provides to the post-graduate students a general introduction to the various types and dinstictive characters of Byzantine and Medieval written and other historical sources: Narrative Sources of Byzantine History; Sources and Research tools of Byzantine Historical Geography; Byzantine Legal sources and “Taktika”; Byzantine Documents; Byzantine Seals; Byzantine Numismatics; Written Sources for the History of the Medieval West; Written Sources for the History of the Slavic world.
1st – 2nd Week: Georgios Leveniotis – General Introduction, Narrative Sources of Byzantine History, Sources of Historical Geography
3rd – 4th Week: Andreas Gkoutzioukostas – Byzantine Legal Sources and “Taktika”
5th– 6th Week: Elisabeth Chatziantoniou – Byzantine Diplomatic Sources (Documents)

Student Assessment
Description
Students will have to study weekly specific book chapters and articles (in Greek or other language) related to the study of the sources and present, orally or in written, brief reports of their critical reading. They will also have to study and comment on specific sources. Students' evaluation will depend on their presentations, their ability to argue and to answer complicated questions based on bibliography and the relevant sources.
