Course Content (Syllabus)
The seminar will examine issues related to current problems and debates in the formation of Aegean societies in the 3rd and 2nd mill. BC. In particular, themes which will be extensively discussed include: the passage from Neolithic sharing to the EBA independent household, the emergence of social complexity in the Early Bronze Age and the dominant role of the Cyclades in the exchange networks of the Aegean, the formation of the Middle Helladic societies in the Greek mainland and the emergence of local leaderships in the early Mycenaean period, the role of trading systems in the Aegean and the eastern Mediterranean as well as the interaction of the Aegean with their neigbors, the modern interepretative approaches to the emergence of 'foreign' cultural features in the formation of local communities, e.g. minoanisation, mycenaeanization.

Student Assessment
Description
Students will have to study and present weekly selected articles from the Greek or foreign literature in order to develop in a critical way their arguments and get involved in a thorough discussion. In addition, students will have to prepare the oral presentation of a topic which will be selected from a proposed list and will be submitted in written form by the end of the semester.
