Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the students will have: • understood the function and principles of design/redesign of building envelopes with environmental criteria, • acquired the skills of architectural synthesis with the environmental and energy behaviour of buildings as a key parameter, • become familiar with the process of quantifying the energy/environmental behaviour of building envelopes during the architectural synthetic process using thermal simulation programs, • acquired the knowledge for a wider energy-functional upgrade of buildings and surrounding environments.
General Competences
  • Apply knowledge in practice
  • Retrieve, analyse and synthesise data and information, with the use of necessary technologies
  • Adapt to new situations
  • Make decisions
  • Work in teams
  • Work in an interdisciplinary team
  • Design and manage projects
  • Respect natural environment
  • Be critical and self-critical
  • Advance free, creative and causative thinking
Course Content (Syllabus)
The Architectural Design Studio focuses on the synthesis of buildings and envelopes with a particular emphasis on the environmental adaptation in its broader sense (integration in the urban and physical space, volumetric synthesis and scaling, orientation, processing of the envelope, surfaces, openings and filters of the envelope, layout of the spaces, elements of indoor climate control, synthesis and processing of closed, semi-open and open areas, materials and plantings). The design may concern the synthesis of a new building or the creative reuse and adaptation of spaces in an environmentally and socially responsible way. In the Architectural Design Studio ΙΙ, an assessment of the environmental and energy behaviour of the proposed architectural solution is planned using thermal simulation programs. The architectural synthesis is of greater complexity. It treats environmental/energy design theory as a framework of rules during synthesis and construction but also as a framework of principles for the selection of materials and construction products that will render the materiality of the built environment, the buildings and the environment surroundings. The Architectural Design Studio II is enriched with lectures on the ecological, social and cultural parameters of the environment in the context of their relationship with architectural design.

Student Assessment
Description
Public presentation in pdf or ppt format, which will contain the overall proposal and specifically the following information in the proposed order: • main idea / concept, design principles, compositional gestures, environmental approach, circulation and functional diagrams, as well as 200 word text description, • masterplan drawing at a scale of 1.100 with an illustration of the street layout, adjacent building blocks, the inner courtyard, • plans of all levels, sections [one section at least intersecting the staircase/s], views at a scale of 1.100 (a graphic scale is strongly requested on each drawing), • characteristic section of the envelope at a scale of 1.20, which will summarize the environmental strategy of the proposal, the construction details and the choices of materials (indications of natural lighting, shading, natural ventilation, proposed interventions on the envelope and surrounding area, etc.), • photorealistic 3D renderings or physical model photos, focused on the building under study, which will show the relationship of the new building with the neighboring building volumes and the surrounding environment [street view and bird’s eye view], but also specific views of the interventions in the new envelope, as well as indicative views of the interior and exterior space and the overall interventions, • diagrams for documenting the environmental function of the building (recording of climatic data, solar/shading study, ventilation, natural lighting diagrams, diagrams of heating and cooling requirements, etc.). Each group's presentation will last 10 minutes. Afterwards, a discussion with the tutors will follow. All the above will be submitted digitally in A0 boards, and specifically in a vertical layout (portrait), according to a given layout, in 200 dpi resolution.
