Learning Outcomes
Students are expected to be able to:
• understand the interaction among syntax and the other levels of language analysis and in particular with
morphology
• deepen the basics syntactic rules in italian and greek language
• analyze the concepts of universal grammar and parametric variety
• understand the grammar of the phrasal structure and
• be able to put it into practice
• interpret transformational rules and
• be able to put them into practice.
Course Content (Syllabus)
This course is an introduction to the level of syntactic analysis of the language with emphasis on the syntactic analysis of Greek and Italian in multilingual students. It discusses the way in which the phrases and sentences of a natural language are structured and analyzed and the methodology for the analysis of basic syntactic phenomena.
The basic "tool" of description is the Theory of Principles and Parameters within the model of genetic theory, as well as its contemporary developments.
The course is recommended for undergraduate students of the department from the third semester onwards, provided that during the first year of their studies they have successfully completed at least one introductory course in linguistics.
Topics covered are: grammar of phrasal structure, syntax of X (stressed), transformational rules, grammar tests, parameters that affect the order of the terms of the sentence, the theory of government and referential commitment and hypotheses from which it consists of.
