Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to describe the historical and ecclesiastical context of the presence of Christianity in Egypt through the perspective of the Coptic Church and its contribution to the cultural development of Egypt over time. They will be able to analyze the reasons which led to the flourishing, decline and preservation of this culture up to the present day within the strong Islamic tradition of Egypt. They will understand the significance of the Coptic Christian presence in Egypt and how this has influenced the modern course of the country and the Christian world in general in the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East up to the present day.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Egypt was the place of great growth in Christian preaching. Until the Arab conquest it was fully Christian. Though divided in two Christian Churches. The Orthodox and the Coptic Church which did not accept the decisions of Chalcedon and followed Monophysitism. The aim of the course is to provide students a holistic overview of the history and cultural contribution of the Coptic Church to the historical course of Egypt, through the showcasing persons, events, sacred monastic centres and pilgrimages as well as the cultural goods produced by it. Syllabus: 1. Introduction to Egypt and the development of Christianity. 2. The formation of the Coptic identity. 3. History of the Coptic Church 4. Institutions and Organization of the Coptic Church 5. Coptic Language I : Historical Elements 6. Coptic Language II: Grammatical and syntactic elements of the Bohai dialect 7. Coptic Language III: Short textual examples 8. Coptic Literature and Philology 9. Elements of Canon Law 10.Elements of Liturgical Life and Tradition 11. Coptic Art - Coptic Culture 12. Monasticism - Monastic Tradition 13. Coptic Spirituality – Perspectives
