Academic education must prepare students both for their future jobs but also as scientists and members of a society that is currently facing global challenges such as population growth, social inequalities, conflicts and movements, environmental problems, transition to an information society etc. Sociology analyzes social reality through the lens of different theoretical streams and is a powerful scientific tool that helps an agronomist to comprehend what lies beyond a surface reading of reality. After the completion of the course students will be able to : 1. raise awareness - understand the rapidly changing social eco-system in which they are going to live and to operate as people, scientist-practitioners- agronomists. 2. gain sociological imagination, recognizing aspects of the social environment even under the superficial reading of reality /understand why some social events happen 3. connect theory to practice in everyday life in rural communities 4. use/adapt basic theoretical streams of sociology useful to agriculture and rural society 5. learn some field research techniques that can be applied to describe social phenomena in the countryside
