Course Content (Syllabus)
Occupational Health Psychology (OHP) is an interdisciplinary field of Applied Psychology that is concerned with the health, well-being, and safety of workers. OH psychologists utilize scientific methodology a) to understand the impact of (emotional, cognitive, physical) job characteristics on employee physical and mental health and work-related behaviors, b) to understand the interface between work and non-work, and c) to design interventions that target at protecting and promoting employee health and well-being. This course aims to cover all core topics of OHP by recognizing three distinct -yet related- levels of analysis: the work context, the organizational context, and the broader socioeconomic context. During this course the following topics are covered: 1) History and Development of OHP 2) Occupational Stress and Employee Health 3) Theoretical models that explain employee well-being (burnout, work engagement, workaholism, job satisfaction); 4) Health-Related Behaviors: Sickness Absence and Sickness Presence; 5) Emotional Labor; 6) Work/Non-work interface; 7) Recovery from job demands; 8) Interventions in Organizations: Job Redesign and Job Crafting; 9) Societal Crises and Occupational Health. Also, during the practicum, students will get acquainted with the main principles of job analysis and will learn how to use this tool in the context of job (re)design that aims at healthier and more safe work environments.
