Course Content (Syllabus)
Currently, there is a discussion on the increasing internationalization of education, which is manifested in the growing interdependence of education systems in a competitive environment, the shifting of a significant part of the responsibility of education policy from the national to the European and international level, the harmonization of educational objectives and policies, etc. Key terms, such as “competencies/skills”, “learning outcomes”, “quality”, “accountability”, “assessment”, “privatization”, etc., have prevailed within the context of internationalization of education.
The course discusses these developments from the perspective of Comparative Education. It, first, sheds light on Comparative Education as a field of Educational Science, which focuses on the study, understanding and comparison of educational systems, with the aim of improvement. It then discusses the manifestations and challenges posed by the internationalization on education systems, focusing on the role of international and European organizations (OECD, UNESCO, European Union, Council of Europe) and international comparative performance studies of school students, such as PISA. The course then concentrates on certain examples of European education systems (Finland, Germany, England and France), especially their different dimensions (historical overview, administration and funding, structure, school curriculum, teacher profile and training, etc.) but also on the search for the effects of internationalization on their current orientations.
