Course Content (Syllabus)
The course concerns the Epistemology of the Social Sciences, i.e. the Epistemology that directs the Research Methods of human systems. It focuses on the field of pedagogy and education, while, at the same time, it involves psychology, sociology and part of the humanities. The content of the course is structured in three main levels. The first aims at the historical review of key points of human thought: Empiricism, Rationalism, Positivism, Hermeneutics, Constructivism, Idealism, Materialism, Skepticism, Postmodernism, Critical rationalism. The weak points of the above epistemologies are identified, and a critical discussion is introduced, which leads to the second part which concerns the presentation of Complexity Theory. A new metatheoretical framework with a new epistemology, which aspires to unify the field of social sciences. Methodological approaches such as network theory, catastrophe theory, non-linear methods consistent with complex non-linear systems, as well as the new perspective on qualitative methods are also considered. In conclusion, a different worldview is given for global reality, whose increasing complexity requires a paradigm shift for its understanding.
