Learning Outcomes
Students will learn:
(a) what etymology is.
(b) the differences between inherited words, loanwords and new formations.
(c) the role of the theories about language change for the etymology.
(d) differences between etymology of Ancient and Modern Greek.

Course Content (Syllabus)
We focus on the etymology of the Greek language. The categories of the Greek vocabulary are: inherited words, loanwords and new formations. The vocabulary is also devided into popular and learned; other categories are also examined: internationalisms, calques, semantic loanwords etc. We are interested in both Ancient and Modern Greek vocabulary and etymology, and we examine the differences between these two periods.
