Prerequisites
General Prerequisites
The course requires students to have prior knowledge of Balkan Linguistics, Language Contact, and Balkan Languages, either through the respective courses offered in the undergraduate program of the Department of Linguistics or through personal study, in cases where they come from other departments or universities.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students will gain a more comprehensive understanding of the production of bilingual/multilingual dictionaries in the Balkans during the 18th and 19th centuries. Through these dictionaries, we can trace common features of the Balkan languages that are members of the Balkansprachbund, and also understand what the transition from the pre-national to the national phase of the Balkans means and how it is reflected in lexicography. Another important aspect is monitoring the role and position of the Greek language during the aforementioned periods, which is useful in understanding how the modern Balkans were shaped and how the Balkan linguistic landscape changed over time.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Balkan Linguistics: Bilingual/Multilingual Dictionaries and Glossaries in the Balkans during the 18th and 19th Centuries
This course examines a series of bilingual and multilingual dictionaries and glossaries that appeared in the Balkans during the 18th and 19th centuries, in which Greek constitutes a distinct column and (usually) the source language. We reflect on the objectives and structure of these works, exploring the differences between the lexicographic production of the pre-national and national periods in the Balkans.
We begin with the Trilingual Dictionary (Greek, Aromanian, Albanian) by Th. Kavalliotis (1770), continue with the Quadrilingual Dictionary (Greek, Aromanian, Albanian, Bulgarian) by D. Moschopolites (1802), focus on the [Italo]Greek-Albanian Dictionary by M. Botsaris (1809), "leaf through" the Greek-Bulgarian Dictionary by N. Rilski (circa 1840), move on to the Albanian-Greek and Greek-Albanian Dictionary by E. Mitko (circa 1880), and conclude with the Dictionary of the Albanian Language by K. Christoforidis (compiled around 1870–1890, published in 1904), in which the language of interpretation is Greek.
How useful are these works ultimately for Balkan linguistics? What is the place and role of Greek in this particular lexicographic production? These and other related questions will be addressed through classroom discussion and through the assignments undertaken by students.

Description
The content of the course necessitates the use of slides and PowerPoint presentations in order to showcase the dictionaries under examination, many of which are currently rare or available only in digital form. Additionally, a large portion of these dictionaries survive today in manuscript form.
