Learning Outcomes
Students will learn: (a) what Indo-European Ablaut and the laryngeal theory are. (b) the differences between the formation of words/forms by the means of Ablaut and of morphemes. (c) the role of the phonetic laws in obscuring the Indo-European Ablaut. (d) the role of the laryngeal theory in Indo-european Linguistics.

Course Content (Syllabus)
We focus on the Indo-european Ablaut and the Laryngeal theory. We examine the role of the Indo-european Ablaut in Proto-Indo-european and in Ancient Greek. Also, the differences between the formation of words/forms by the means of Ablaut and of morphemes. The basic phonetic laws of Ancient Greek are presented, together with the way they obscured the function of the Indo-European Ablaut. Also, the basic principles of the laryngeal theory are presented, together with its role in Indo-european Linguistics and in the development of Ancient Greek.
