Learning Outcomes
Learning and understanding of: the chemical bonds and types of non-covalent interactions. the organic compounds of biological importance (structural and functional characteristics). the importance of Biochemistry in Medicine. the role of water, pH and buffers in homeostasis. the structure of biological macromolecules and their role in physiological and pathological conditions. the structure and function of enzymes. the structure and function of biological membranes and their association with substance transport and signaling. basic laboratory skills, preparation of solutions, titration, pH measurement, application of protocols, photometric methods of qualitative and quantitative analysis, chromatography.

Course Content (Syllabus)
- Chemical bonds and types of non-covalent interactions - Organic compounds of biological importance (structural and functional characteristics) - The molecule of water and its importance in biological structures and functions - pH and buffers - Amino acids and proteins (structure levels, biological functions) - Methods of analysis and study of proteins - Proteomic approach - Structure and role of nucleotides and nucleic acids (DNA, RNA) - Methods of analysis and study of nucleic acids and genomes - The technology of recombinant DNA - Structure and functional characteristics of hemoglobin - Enzymes (Basic principles and kinetics, principles of catalysis strategies, strategies for regulating enzyme activity) - Carbohydrates (structure and functional characteristics of monosaccharides, disaccharides and polysaccharides, glycoproteins and proteoglycans) - Fatty acids and lipids (structure and functional characteristics) - Structure and properties of biological membranes - Types of transport through membranes (simple and facilitated diffusion, active transport) - Laboratory exercises to acquire basic skills.
