Learning Outcomes
At the end of the semester, the student will be able to:
1. recognize and analyze the traits of the main film movements and genres,
2. recognize and analyze thethe sociopolitical context that influences cinema and
3. conduct bibliographical and academic research and write an academic essay.

Course Content (Syllabus)
This course presents briefly the history of cinema from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the new millennium. The conditions of the medium’s birth and development, silent film (development of classic narrative, German impressionism, French impressionism & Soviet montage), Hollywood’s Golden Era and film genres, New Waves and New Cinemas (1958-1960), New Hollywood and changes in production, distribution and technology. Emphasis is given on the impact of the historical context on film production and distribution. Finally, additional focus is given on the methodology of New Film History and the basic guidelines/principles of academic research and writing.

Important Notice: Regarding the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in written assignments for history/theory courses in the Film Department.
According to the guidelines of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), as outlined on the website https://www.lib.auth.gr/el/ai_tools, "the use of AI tools for the creation of assignments that have been assigned to you for evaluation is not permitted." Furthermore, copying sentences, phrases, paragraphs, or entire texts, or even paraphrasing them, "constitutes plagiarism" and is treated as such. For the film history and theory courses (both mandatory and elective), the faculty members of the School of Film Department use the Turnitin tool to detect potential plagiarism of all forms (including AI from all current and future tools). Any assignment that includes more than 20% AI content, according to Turnitin, will not be graded higher than 4/10.

Student Assessment
Description
Students are evaluated based on an individual academic paper (1,500 to 2000 words, 85%) and class participation (15%). Students can receive extra credit through weekly individual or group micro-assignments (max number of micro-assignments/student:3, grade/project (0,5-1/10).
Essay evaluation criteria
• Structure: 1,5/10
• Presentation / Language / Morphology: 2,5/10
• Content: Working Hypothesis / Relevant-adequate bibliography/ appropriate quotations / Originality / Argumentation: 6/10.
