Course Content (Syllabus)
The objective of the course is to provide students with an introduction to the various modes of documentary filmmaking and to the great creative and expressive possibilities offered to those who wish to explore it. Starting by detaching the notion of documentary film from the conventional factual television programs, lacking «cinematic charm», the course encourages students to discover the documentary forms that will excite and inspire them personally. The Thessaloniki International Documentary Festival -that takes part every March- is therefore creatively incorporated in the curriculum. Students are expected to participate actively in the festival, encounter various narratives, meet Greek and foreign filmmakers and write a critical analysis on the structure and style of their favourite festival film. The theoretical part of the course refers to the evolution of documentary film, its history, the main trends and the classic case-studies. Parallel to that students are introduced to the main theoretical issues and concepts of documentary that allow them to develop a critical approach. The main project of the course is the preparation of a 2-3 page treatment for a documentary film, through research, writing of a series of drafts and presentations in class.

Student Assessment
Description
Students are evaluated on the basis of their two written projects as well as their participation in class. Regular class attendance is expected of all students. Students who fail to attend 70% of the classes cannot have a successful evaluation despite the quality of their submitted projects.
