Learning Outcomes
The seminar examines aspects of women's history and gender. Using the methodological tools of feminist criticism and gender studies, it discusses the role and participation of women in the Greek-speaking theatre of the 19th century. The seminar will be research-based. It is also an introductory course to theatre history methodology and research as well as academic writing.
By the end of this class students should have:
Familiarised themselves with feminist theory, gender studies, and the history of women
learned the basic tools of research in theatre history.
Learned about gender definitions and constructions
Acquired analytical tools that allow them to question big narratives.
Students are also expected to learn to work collectively in their projects.

Introduction to the course: methodology, objectives, prerequisites, assessment
- Sex, gender, feminism (in writing and performance): terminology, history, theory/studies
- History of women in Europe from the Renaissance to 18th century - introductory remarks
- Women and theatre in the 18th and the 19th century: writing and performing for the stage
- Women's emancipation movement and the theatre
- Women and theatre in the Greek-speaking areas during the 19th century
- Feminist criticism
- Historical research in the 19th-c.: archives, press and bibliography

Student Assessment
Description
The student assessment is based on the evaluation of the student's attendance and participation in the class during the weekly meetings (10%), the oral presentation (30%), the research on the project each has been assigned with (30%), and the short final written essay (30%) The criteria of the evaluation are presented and discussed from the beginning while detailed guidelines have been uploaded to e-learning.
