General Prerequisites
This course consists in a selection of topics in the area of moral and social philosophy, emphasizing topics that have come to the fore over the last decades. We discuss theories such as moral subjectivism, emotivism and cultural relativism, as well as the varieties of egoism. We then make a short introduction to the central approaches in normative ethics, to set the framework for the discussion that follows. Then we discuss topics such as the justification of punishment by different theories of normative ethics, moral luck, the difference between doing and allowing, the doctrine of double effect, as well as related issues about moral responsibility.
Learning Outcomes
1. Upon completing the course, students will show advanced understanding of the argumentation involved in the topics of moral and political philosophy examined.
2. Upon completing the course, students will have developed the necessary skills which will allow them to engage with philosophical texts concerning the topics examined.
3. Upon completing the course, students will have developed their critical skills in understanding and assessing philosophical arguments.
Course Content (Syllabus)
This course explores certain topics that have been prominent in the area of moral and social philosophy over the last decades. The course starts with a short introduction to the main approaches to normative ethics. Then we examine topics that include moral luck, doing and allowing harm, the doctrine of double effect, the justification of punishment, as well as related issues in the area of moral responsibility.
