Learning Outcomes
The purpose of the course is to acquaint postgraduate students with the theory of inversion and its application to Geophysical problems. Emphasis is placed on the basic principles of inversion methods, examples of their application in Geophysics, as well as the implementation of inversion methods with appropriate code in the Matlab programming language.
General Competences
  • Retrieve, analyse and synthesise data and information, with the use of necessary technologies
  • Work autonomously
  • Work in an interdisciplinary team
  • Generate new research ideas
Course Content (Syllabus)
The individual topics discussed are the following: 1) Introduction to the General Principles of Inversion theory (Direct and inverse problem, model parameterization, etc.). 2) Nonlinear and linear/linearized inverse problems. Examples from Geophysics. 3) Solving linear problems with the theory of Least Squares. 4) Solution evaluation measures (Covariance tables, Resolution matrix, Resolving length). 5) Eigenvalue analysis and connection to the least squares solution. 6) Least squares with normalization: a) Least squares with damping, b) Least squares with smoothing factors. 7) Solution of selected problems using MATLAB.
