Course Content (Syllabus)
This course deals with a range of questions that concern the nature of mental states and processes and their manifestation in human action. We shall examine some established theories in the area of the philosophy of mind, such as behaviorism, functionalism, anomalous monism and reductive physicalism. Then we examine how these theories deal with issue such as the following ones. What are the distinctive marks of the mental? What is the relation between mind and brain? What is the nature of mental causation? We also examine related questions in the philosophy of action. Is the relation between intention and action a causal one? What distinguishes an action from a mere event or process? We assess the ways in which different approaches to the nature of human mind deal with such questions.
