Course Content (Syllabus)
As a place defined by holiness, the holy mountain Athos is distinguished for the creation of a rich hagiographic tradition that appears from the very beginning of its cenobitic history and is associated with the prominent figures of its prehistory and history (Peter the Athonite, Athanasios the Athonite, Gregory Palamas, Nicodemus the Hagiorite, etc.). From the research of the Athonite hagiographic texts, it can be seen that over the years this tradition has been greatly enriched and has become one of the main genres that distinguish the Athonite literature. The number of Athonite Saints is very large and chronological or thematic criteria distinguish them in particular categories.
In a direct connection, the cultivation of hymnography is also examined, which was also of particular concern to the Athonites, since it was related to the attribution of liturgical honour to feasts and holy persons who were part of the Church calendar. The circle of Athonite hymnographers is particularly large and their hymnographic production, both in the context of the formation of hymnographic collections and the composition of hymns, is very large and remains largely unexplored.
