The duration of the studies in the School of Physical Education and Sports Science is at least 8 semesters (240 ECTS in total). The School operates a two semester academic year with each semester (30 ECTS) running for approximately 13 teaching weeks followed by 4 weeks of examination. During the first 4 semesters the students attend 25 core courses and 4 applied electives (1 course per semester from a list of 14 applied, elective courses). During the 5th and 6th semester the students attend: 6 required advanced courses (3 courses per semester), 2 advanced applied electives (1 course per semester, from a list of 8 elective courses). In addition, during the 5th and 6th semester, the students are required to attend 2 supervised practical training courses in schools of primary and secondary education (1 per semester). During the 7th and 8th semester, the students select and attend (i) an area of specialization (8 hours per week), (ii) 2 required elective courses in the field of Pedagogy (1 per semester - "Pedagogical Psychology" is required in case the students are interested in obtaining a teaching qualification), (iii) 2 required elective courses (1 per semester) in the field of "exercise for health", and (iv) 4 elective courses (2 per semester, from a list of 11 courses), or 2 elective courses (1 per semester) and an undergraduate thesis project (Thesis I and Thesis II). The School also offers the option of practical training/internship as an elective course in the 3rd and 4th year of studies ("student placement", offered as an advanced applied elective course).
Grades are based on oral or written exams and/or projects or a combination of the above .
Teaching methods: Teaching in the courses offered is based in classroom lectures, applied/practical methods of teaching, laboratory work or combination of the above. Attendance in at least 70% of the classes is required for specialization, advanced courses, applied/practical, and laboratory courses, whereas, attendance in at least 90% of the classes is required for practical training in primary and secondary education.
Upon successful completion of the program requirements (at least 240 ECTS), the graduate will be able to study and comprehend scientific developments in Physical Education and Sport Science and produce new knowledge. A special focus in this Curriculum is placed in the acquisition of skills (sport, psychological, educational, health-related etc) contributing to the development of Sport Science. On an applied level, the Curriculum aims at promoting the development of educational outcomes and acquisition of skills which enable students to provide services in education, health, recreation and competitive sport coaching. Finally, the Curriculum, aims at highlighting physical activity and sport, as a mean for social inclusion, recreation, fitness improvement, exercise for health promotion, creativity, and in general, as an improvement of the quality of life in all ages.
Therefore, graduates of the School of Physical Education and Sports Science, according to their selected topics and specialization will be eligible to: 1) teach Physical Education in Primary and Secondary Education, 2) perform research in the area of Sports Sciences, 3) provide training and coaching services to optimize athletic performance, 4) assess the biological adaptations through exercise and evaluate sports performance, 5) analyze the mechanics of sport movements, 6) comprehend and provide for the psychological wellbeing of participants and teams in sport and exercise, 7) plan and supervise exercise programs for the promotion of health, 8) promote the physical, mental, social and moral development of the participants, through exercise, 9) apply exercise as a therapeutic mean to participants with disabilities, special abilities, and chronic disease, 10) provide exercise in various job environments, 12) promote outdoor recreational activities.
Besides their knowledge and skills related to Sport Sciences, graduates of the School of Physical Education and Sports Science are expected to able to: 1) search, analyze and compose data and information by using the appropriate technology, 2) adapt to new environments and take appropriate decisions, 3) work independently or in groups in international and/or cross scientific environments, 4) produce new ideas and plan/ administer scientific and research projects, 6) respect diversity, multiculturalism and physical environment, 7) exhibit professional, social and moral responsibility, 8) be sensitive to issues related to gender and 9) exhibit critical thinking.
