For obtaining the M.Sc. degree from the Graduate Program on Nanosciences and Nanotechnologies - N&N of the Departments of Physics, Chemistry and Biology, organized by the Physics Department, students are required to successfully complete the courses of four semesters, which correspond to 120 ECTS (Ministerial Decision no B7/20200/21-03-2003, Hellenic Government Gazette no 575/12-05-2003/Β and Ministerial Decision no Β7/53808/10-07-2007, Hellenic Government Gazette no 1268 /24-7-2007Β).
The Program follows an assessment system with distribution and collection of specific forms (questionnaires) to teachers, students and the program evaluator, statistical processing and reporting of the results (confidential) on an annual basis.
At the first three Semesters (each 30 ECTS), graduate students must attend and successfully be examined in 11 courses. In particular, in the first Semester, the students choose four of the six courses offered, in the second Semester, the students choose four of the seven courses offered and in the third Semester, students choose 3 of the 8 courses offered while they are starting the preparation of their Master-degree thesis. The fourth Semester is dedicated exclusively to the accomplishment of the Master-degree thesis, which is presented publicly and subsequently reviewed by a three-member Evaluation Committee. The students are encouraged to present their research work at national and international conferences. The Graduate Program students can choose between the three areas of specialization, which the program provides, according to their basic studies, the courses they have chosen in the Program, their desires and skills. This option is based on the 11 courses of the first three Semesters, attended by the students in conjunction with the Master-degree thesis:
1. Thin Film Technology & Nanotechnology
2. Nanomechanics & Nanomaterials
The Program leads to an M.Sc. degree in the rapidly growing areas of Nanosciences and Nanotechnologies. The coverage of these areas requires the involvement of many Sciences justifying its interdisciplinary character. In recent years, these areas began to form a core of intense activity in which a number of Research Programs, scientific collaborations and industrial investment are focused. Nanotechnologies have already penetrated into every aspect of contemporary reality, finding application in various fields such as power, communication, health, environmental management etc. while orienting education and research towards new horizons of development.
The objectives of the Program are: i) The promotion of knowledge and skills in new interdisciplinary areas (Thin Film Technology & Nanotechnology, Nanomechanics & Nanomaterials, Nanobiotechnology ), ii) The creation of scientists capable of pursuing academic/research career, iii) Coverage of the needs for properly trained managers in enterprises and organizations, iv) The preparation of Executives able to promote the development and creation of new high-tech enterprises, v) The development of research in relation to the Programscientific areas, vi) Networking with recognized Educational/Research Programs abroad in new Sciences and Technologies, vii) Providing a high level of knowledge for efficient/effective use of new Technologies in manufacturing enterprises - users, viii) To organize conferences, seminars and training schools in order to disseminate knowledge and information on developments in cutting-edge Technologies, ix) To trigger the interest and the understanding of the complex and dynamic International Scientific and Technological environment and x) The ability to work either independently or in groups, in research activities and in many cases within International Research Programs, seeking new knowledge and updated bibliography on the latest developments of Science, presentation and support of their work to others.
The graduates of the Program are qualified as skilled personnel in the following areas: i) education, Secondary and Higher Education, increasing of the demands on teachers that take a broad scientific understanding and have the ability to pass it to others, ii) research, Higher Education and Research, where scientists needed interdisciplinary approach to methodology, experimental design and problem solving, iii) for the private and public sector enterprises, young scientists - graduates will be capable executives to meet the challenges and demands of the business world.
