ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Postgraduate
Degree of 1st cycle of studies from Schools of Civil Engineering, from other Schools of Greek Universities and Technological Education Institutes and from recognized foreign institutions of equivalent status that are related to the subject of the postgraduate programme.
The student must satisfy the programme requirements as prescribed in the course syllabus and complete the postgraduate thesis, so that at the end of his/her studies he/she obtains a total of 75 ECTS credits.
During the first semester of studies (30 ECTS) the students have to follow successfully 4 compulsory courses, while during the second semester they have to choose 5 elective courses, out of the respective list. During summer, the students have to produce their Diploma Thesis, which is publicly defended and evaluated by a three-member committee.
The postgraduate programme, through its core and elective courses, as well as through the elaboration of the postgraduate thesis, trains its students, who are mainly civil engineers or engineers and scientists of relevant fields, in the technology of environmental protection, as well as in the socioeconomic and legal issues that are directly related to the environmental planning and management as well as to the impacts of projects and actions on sustainable development.
The graduates of the programme have acquired knowledge, skills and competencies in the fields of assessment, management and economics of the environment and natural resources, of management and processing of environmental data, and of decision and risk analysis as well. Furthermore, they possess specialized knowledge, skills and competences in the fields of the elective courses that they have followed in the context of their programme studies.
Beyond the basic knowledge of the scientific field of sustainable development and environmental protection, the graduates have been trained so as to have the ability to: 1) apply their knowledge in practice, 2) search, analyze and combine data and information by using appropriate tools and technologies, 3) design and manage projects, 4) adapt to new situations and to make informed decisions, 5) work individually or in groups in international and/or interdisciplinary contexts and 6) generate new research ideas Moreover, the programme promotes: 1) respect of the natural environment, 2) critical, free, productive and deductive thinking 3) social, professional and moral responsibility and 4) respect of diversity and sensitivity on gender issues.
On the basis of these postgraduate studies graduates can perform highly specialized functions in the labor market. In addition, the graduates have developed specific qualifications needed for research and doctoral studies.

One full year (12 months) of intensive studies that correspond to 75 ECTS credits. In order to obtain the qualification (MDE) postgraduate students are required to successfully complete one cycle of full-time integrated studies in two semesters (winter and spring, each of 13 weeks duration) that correspond to 60 ECTS credits, and to prepare and successfully pass during the summer period a postgraduate thesis that corresponds to 15 ECTS credits.
