Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course students will be able to: 1. Students will have a general knowledge on the type and groups of pesticides registered to be used in EU and Greece. 2. Knowlegde on general principals of pesticide pharmacology and toxicology. 3.Knowledge on principals involved in pesticide risk assessment from long term exposure to pesticides . 4. General knowledge on the effects of pesticides on the environment, environmental contamination and pollution especially of soil, water and atmosphere. 5. Knowledge on safe and sustainable use of pesticides

Course Content (Syllabus)
Introduction to Pesticide Chemistry, Pharmacology and Toxicology. Groups of pesticides, and mode of action, environmental behavior and persistence, formulation, main types of formulated materials and general physicochemical properties of existing formulations. Regulations and Law, principals of Good Agricultural Practice and Safe Use of Pesticides. General principals of Pesticide Pharmacology and Toxicology. Biological action, toxicity (acute and chronic toxicity) and effectiveness of pesticides; factors affecting biological action. Formulation and Labeling (purpose of formulation, types of formulated materials, their characteristics and respective application methods). Grouping of pesticides into Insecticides, fungicides, herbicides and other minor groups. General physico-chemical properties and mode of action of insecticides, fungicides and herbicides. Biopesticides Basic principals of the fate and behavior of pesticides into the environment (soil, water, atmosphere). Basic principals on pesticide persistence and pesticide residues in food. Basic principals of pesticide risk assessment and principals of safe use (principals of Good Agricultural Practice, Safe Use, handling and transportation). Brief presentation of EU/Greek regulations and Law on pesticide registration processes and actions to achieve sustainable use of pesticides (including analysis of formulation labels).
