Students should have basic background in Food Engineering as well as in the Principles of Food Processing and Preservation
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. understand principles related to automation systems and process control, 2. understand the developments in process control equipment and automation systems, 3. make informed decisions about the most appropriate automation level for a food plant and about its development procedure, 4. understand the operation of the different components of an automation system.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Introduction to automatic control. Open loop and closed loop control. Sensors. Instrumentation and process control loops. Components of of control systems (valves, relays, transistors, photocells, thermostats). Binary logic and logical control. Implementation of automation systems with digital circuits and programmable logic controllers (PLC). Developments in process control equipment and automation systems (“smart” sensors, digital communication networks, statistical process control, process validation). Artificial intelligence and expert systems. Neural networks and machine vision in food processing. Examples of industrial applications. Trends in process automation for fruit and vegetable quality control.
