Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course students will be able to understand the fundamental techniques and concepts of microbiology, such as microscopic observations, aseptic transfer, microorganism classification and identification, environmental factors influencing microorganisms, biochemistry of microorganisms and ecological microbiology

Course Content (Syllabus)
1.Safety in microbiological laboratory. Bacic laboratory equipment and tools.
2. Aseptic techniques in microbilogical analyses.
3. Substrates for microbiological cultures. Preparation, sterilization and maintance. Morphology of colonies.
4. Plate count technique. Decimal dilutions.
5. Isolation of microorganisms from mixed cultues. Streaking on agar.
6. Microscopy. Staining techniques. Simple stain.
7. Gram staining.
8.Identification of bacteria. Biochemical tests. Catalase, oxidase, O/F test, motility.
9. Microbial examination of air and equipment in food industry. Human microflora
10. Most Probable Number technique. Enumeration of Coliforms in water by MPN.
11.Detection of microorganisms found in low numbers. Membrane filtration and sample enrichment techniques.
12. Fungi: yeasts and molds. Substrates for cultivation. Observation of colony formation. Cell morphology under microscope.
13. Thermal inactivation of microorganisms. Calculation of D and Z values.
