Learning Outcomes
Getting familiar in detail with the following terminology: landscape, the spatial factor of landscape, land cover, land use, land use change, land use and agriculture, land use planning, landscape planning, spatial planning, landscape analysis, landscape assessment, sustainable development, environmental problems, landscape ecology. Creation of land use map of an urban area in reference particularly to urban open spaces and green present.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Syllabus
Terminology: environment, landscape, land, land use, land use planning, European legal framework. Defining landscape, landscape change and the spatial dimension of landscape. Landscape and photography.
Landscape analysis: methodology, categorizing landscape analysis components: (a) landscape identity: (b) man and landscape (c) environment and climate and (d) perception and landscape use.
Landscape Assessment. Types of landscape assessment: (a) descriptive methods, landscape assessment character, landscape assessment character sheets, landscape types, (b) quantitative methods using GIS, (c) quantitative methods using public preference surveys.
Environment and its protection: Major environmental problems of the planet and their relation to land use planning. Sustainability and sustainable development. Problems created by lack of proper land use planning.
Spatial Planning and land use planning. Land use categories. Corine land cover. Contemporary applications / programs of categorizing land uses.
Evolution of town planning in Greece, 19th- 20th century with emphasis in land use and urban open spaces. The city and landscape of Thessaloniki from the ancient times until today, evolution of urban open spaces.
Landscape ecology, Landscape change and land use change in the suburban landscape, the case of eastern Thessaloniki. Land use and Agriculture.
