Expected learning outcomes: To have a thorough knowledge of the texts discussed in class/ familiarization of students with traits or tendencies found in the writings by Heinrich Böll/ familiarization of students with the post-World War II period in Germany/ Ability to connect texts to their social, historical and cultural context/ improvement of the students critical thought.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The Nobel-Prize awarded author Heinrich Böll (1917-1985) combines social engagement with highbrow literature. Concerned with the German Nazi-past and striving against oblivion, he takes stance against the consumerism and conservatism of postwar German society and stands up for the underprivileged and the outcasts of this society. The course aims at examining the main themes, motives and techniques of his work in relation to the historical and cultural developments of his times.
