Learning Outcomes
Students attending the course are expected to: • comprehend the historical context of the Middle and Late Byzantine Period • understand the notion of capital punishment • acquire knoweldge regarding social stratification in the Middle and Late Byzantine Period • realise the role which religious beliefs played in civil wars and conflicts • recognise the real motives behind every rebel and the way in which Βyzantine emperors dealt with them • practise in the written and oral presentation of ideas and arguments

Course Content (Syllabus)
This module will focus on the Middle and Late Byzantine period with a view to examining conspiracies, rebellions and usurpations against emperors which were often based on religious motives. The rivalry for authority between prominent families and the sharp social contrasts between the rich and the poor are additional factors which caused political change and conflict and they will be explored too Lectures Detailed description of weekly lectures (Syllabus) Week #1 Introduction: Presentation of the syllabus, bibliography and of current research trends in the field.
