Learning Outcomes
After the successful completion of the course, the students will be able to describe the historical and ecclesiastical context that was formed from the 4th to the 6th AD century within and outside of the Byzantine borders. To analyze the reasons which led to the concrete ecclesiastical policy. To understand the meaning and content of Christian Ecumene, too.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The course deals with the research and study of basic points of ecclesiastical geography from the 4th to the 6th century AD. So the students will understand the historical context which was formed. The Church was used as a dynamic weapon in the hands of the State, for the promotion of civil affairs and of the ecumenical vision. Christianity gradually incorporated into the political and ideological system of Roman Empire from the 4th century AD, forming the ecumenical policy of Byzantium. 1. Sources and texts of ecclesiastical geography. 2. Christian and ecclesiastical topography . 3. Introduction to the history of the Roman Empire from 4th to 6th AD century. 4. Christianity and the paths of commerce 5. Eusebius: the proposer of the «political theology». 6. Christian World and Byzantium. “Divine Kigdom”. 7. Configuring ecclesiastical jurisdictions and boundaries. 8. The Persian antipode. Christianity in Sassanian Empire. 9. The Church in Sassanian Empire. 10. Byzantium and the spread of Christianity to the surrounding people. 11. Byzantium and the spread of Christianity to the surrounding populations. 12. The ecclesiastical policy of Justinian. 13. The Church of Constantinople from the 4th to the 6th AD century.
