Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, the student will: - Understand the political, cultural and ecclesiastical differentiation between East and West during the 13th century - know the trends towards political and religious efforts to bridge the divided East and West through the meeting in Lyon - compare its consequences in theological thought and subsequent literature - analyze the otrhodox objection (αντιρρητικής) literature of period.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The division of the Christian world is presented. In particular, the dialogues and their results are examined, as well as the challenges and the arguments which were developed by the advocates of a unification and by those opposed to it, and finally the work of the opposing theologians from the records of the 9th–15th century. 1. Introduction. The orthodox objection (αντιρρητική) literature from 9th to 15th cent. 2. Specifics. The schism (cause - character). 3. The Filioque and the primacy of authority. 4. The dialogues and their results. 5. Orthodox oppositional writings of the 9th century. 6. Orthodox oppositional writings of the 11th century. 7. The Volume of the 1273 synod, the theological significance and its consequences. 8. Orthodox oppositional writings of the 13rd century. 9. Orthodox oppositional writings of the 14th century. 10. The Patristic Tradition in the work of the oppositional and Hesychastic Fathers and writers of the 14th century. 11. Presentation of work. 12. Presentation of work. 13. Presentation of work.
