Course Content (Syllabus)
The history, art and contribution of the varied Athonite life from the 10th century is examined when the main founder of coenobitic monasticism, Saint Athanasios, founded in 963 AD. the famous Lavra monastery until today. The importance of Mount Athos and its importance for the Nation and the Church are pointed out. The aim of the course is to analyze the rich legacy of Byzantine art, as expressed in Mount Athos architecture, painting and handicrafts. The three types mentioned above are represented by a number of works, which bear the stamp of the Byzantine style and indicate their high quality. Images, illustrated manuscripts, embroidery works, silverware, etc. are included in the works of religious spirituality. The limits of artistic creation constitute common intellectual property and deposit. In addition to the recognized artistic and historical value, the relics are included in the creations of faith and votive offerings of piety of emperors, rulers, clergy and laity, offering to God. Everything points to the greatness of medieval Hellenism that it has preserved the hitherto uninterrupted care of the Mount Athos fathers.
