Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the module the students are expected to: * identify the artworks of the art movements of the period from mid 18th to late 19th century, based on their special stylistic elements * understand the concept of modernism and the ways it has been formulated in the context of visual arts * look into the interconnections between the realist and symbolic artistic tendencies of the period and the new social needs and requirements * understand the ways that the artworks relate to the new economic and political structures, as well as to the forms and institutions of power during these periods * develop their critical capacity concerning the ways art has been formulated in relation to the dominant ideological concerns (liberal, marxist) and clashes of the time (class, social, etc.) * understand the role of the technological and scientific advancements of the period in the formulation of art

Course Content (Syllabus)
This module is concerned with the analysis of the visual art movements in Europe during the period from mid 18th to the end of the 19th centuries (Neoclassicism, Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism, Symbolism, Art Nouveau, post-impressionist movements). The module aims to address these distinctive artistic expressions by indicating their specific characteristics in conjunction to the particular social, economic and political circumstances. Moreover, the module intends to discuss the complexity of the social processes and their interconnections with the artistic and cultural perceptions and practices of the period which set the basis for the avant-gardes and contemporary art. The issues addressed include: * the ways art relates to the bourgeois and proletarian revolutions of that period, as well as to the formulation of the bourgeois national states * the shaping of the subject of the artist on the basis of the dominant ideas of emancipation, independence and autonomy of the individual * modernism as the expression of the new social conditions * from the institution of the academies to the constitution of art in its clash with the established artistic structures

Teaching involves use of computers and systems of projection and sound for power point presentations, video projections and sound reproductions, internet, and the e-learning platform for uploading all relevant educational material (presentations, bibliography, etc.). Communication with the students takes place via email and the e-learning platform.

Student Assessment
The evaluation of the students involves: * presence and participation in the lectures (20%) * presence and participation in the relevant scheduled educational activities (visits to museums, conferences, events, etc.) (15%) * assignments, presentations, exercises, etc. (15%) * written or oral exams (50%)
