Learning Outcomes
The overall aim of this course is to acquaint students with assessment methods and research on ageing. By the end of the course, students will have learned about the research methods on cognitive plasticity, emotion-cognition interactions, and pathological ageing in terms of cognition. On completing this course students should be able to do the following: 1. Identify and evaluate methodological issues in psychological research on cognitively pathological ageing. 2. Evaluate the research methods used to study cognitive plasticity, emotion-cognition interactions during pathological ageing, in terms of cognitive impairment. 3. Be involved in psychological assessment and evaluation of behavior of demented or cognitively impaired older adults mainly by means of testing and intervention.

Course Content (Syllabus)
The course aims at familiarizing students with research in the field of geropsychology. Basic methods for the study of the third and fourth age, experimental designs in geropsychology, intervention studies, longitudinal measurement of intraindividual changes, and cognitive assessment in large-scale surveys represent the main topics that are being covered. As regards specific areas of research interest in the context of this course, emphasis is given on concepts and research methods in the areas of (a) cognitive plasticity in cognitively pathological ageing, (b) emotional processing and emotion-cognition interactions, c) Subjective and Mild Cognitive Impairment and dementia in different types of it.

Student Assessment
Practical involves (a) carrying out a research (including instruments’ selection, test administration, statistical analysis of the data); Practical covers 40% of the course grade; the rest (60%) is covered by exams on the content of the whole course at the end of the semester. As regards the ERASMUS students, the empirical study (practical) could be replaced by literature review on a specific topic of interest in the field of dementia, and writing a review paper.
