It is of importance the students to have attended the History of Theatre I course.
Learning Outcomes
As a follow up to History of World Theatre I, the course discusses theatre in Europe and North America during the 18th and 19th century. Focusing on the aftermath of Renaissance and the emergence of the modernity it explores theatre practices and developments in response to Enlightenment, Romanticism and Realism/Naturalism while examining new genres and plays (by Marivaux, Goldoni, Lessing, Goethe, Gogol, Zola et. al.)

Introduction (overview/ studying/exams) Restauration Theatre: Wycherley, Congreve. 18th century Britain: Goldsmith, Sheridan, Garrick 18th century Italian theatre: the decline of Commedia dell Arte, Goldoni and Gozzi. 18th century French theatre: Enlightment, Reason and Revolution (Marivaux, Diderot, Beaumarchais) 18th century German theatre:essing, Schiller. The emergence of Romanticism. Sturm und Drang, German theatre at the end of 18th century, Romanticism in Germany/England/France The Theatre in North America (18th and 19th c.). Romanticism in Germany Theatre in Russia. Realism and Naturalism.

Student Assessment
WRITTEN EXAMINATION The students have to give answers to informative questions on theatrical developments and facts and write a short text on textual analysis linked to historical material, such as the plays discussed during the lectures. This information is printed on the course syllabus, which is distributed in class and uploaded on the course E-learning site.
