It is strongly recommended not to register for this course unless students have successfully attended the introductory course INE 101.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completing the course, students should be able to: 1. grasp the main stages in contemporary Greece's political, economic and social development 2. think synthetically, bringing together political, ideological, social, economic and cultural facets of contemporary Greece's historical development. 3. comprehend concepts and phenomena such as political parties and their function, the ideological formation and grouping of political and social spaces, and the multiple functions of electoral contests. 4. appreciate continuities and discontinuities in contemporary Greece's historical development. 5. appreciate the supremacy of academic/scholarly history over other varieties, such as public history.

1. Introduction: Political ideologies, political parties and elections 2. The Second Greek Republic, 1924-1935: politics, economy, society 3. The Dictatorship of August 4, 1936 and the Greek-Italian War, 1936-1941 4. Occupation, Resistance, Liberation, 1941-1944 5. The Conflict of December 1944 and the Varkiza Agreement, 1944-1945 6. The Greek Civil War, 1946-1949 7. An 'interval in the Centre', 1950-1952 8. The regrouping of Conservatism, the 'Ellinikos Synagermos' and Alexandros Papagos, 1952-1955 9. Konstantinos Karamanlis and the 'Ethniki Rizospastiki Enosi', 1955-1961 10. Greece's International Relations, the Cyprus Conflict and Greek-Turkish Relations, 1950-1967 11. The Greek Economy, 1947-1967 12. The polarisation between Conservatism and 'anti-Conservatism' (1961-1965), the political and social crisis of 1965 and the dictatorship of 21 April 1967 13. Epilogue: From dictatorship to the restoration of democracy, 1967-1974

Description
Lectures include the use of visual materials (film extracts, maps, paintings, statistical tables, posters etc. in Power-point format). During lectures students are encouraged to participate and comment on these materials as well as to discuss relevant primary and secondary sources. Lecturing includes discussion of the main and/or controversial issues involved.

Description
Written examination:100%. The written examination aims to evaluate the extent, depth and understanding of the main issues on the part of the students, aw well as to assess their critical and analytical skills and ability for synthesis. Students are asked to answer a number of questions that require the identification of a historical problem and the development of a concrete argument for tackling it.
