Learning Outcomes
The course aims to provide a basic understanding of central concepts, theories and issues in pragmatics, and to familiarize students with some models of argumentation and analysis in that field.

Course Content (Syllabus)
Brief introduction to three basic areas of linguistic pragmatics: the study of deixis, the study of speech acts, and the study of conversational implicatures. Main types of theoretical approaches to each of these phenomena are presented, and main issues arising within each type of approach are discussed. Aspects of the relation between pragmatics and semantics, and between pragmatics and syntax, are also examined, as are aspects of the role of pragmatics in language acquisition and language evolution.
